Here are 15 of the best waterproofing sprays for shoes and boots, with recommendations for a range of footwear materials.

I’m super picky about which sprays I use on my shoes and boots because I don’t want to discolor expensive items with bad sprays, and I want the best long-lasting waterproofing results possible. After thoroughly researching reddit forums, amazon reviews and reflecting on my own personal experience I decided to share what I know about waterproofing sprays for shoes, along with a pros and cons review of each spray.

I’ve included sprays for all requirements – from everyday need to harsh outdoor conditions! I have taken into consideration price, effectiveness, and any potential adverse effects to the shoes.

I’ve also included a waterproofing FAQ guide at the end of the post, if you need advice for how to properly use a spray/ how long the spray lasts etc – learn from common mistakes!

1. *Best All-Rounder* Rust-Oleum, Clear Shield H2O Boot and Shoe Spray

View current price on Amazon here.

It can be easier in the long run (and much cheaper!) to have a good all-rounder waterproofing spray in your shoe kit, that works on all of your shoes and boots. What’s not to love about one product that does everything?

This ‘Shield H20’ spray by Rust-Oleum (11oz product) is an excellent multi purpose boot and shoe spray that works on leather, suede, nubuck, canvas and more, making it my top pick!

Here are the pros and cons of this spray:

Pros:

  • A clear formula that doesn’t stain footwear – this is a huge plus for me, as I don’t want to risk any marks at all on my shoes.
  • Great price!
  • Silicone free formula that doesn’t leave any weird residue, or change the feel of the shoes and boots (no grease, stiffness or stickiness).
  • Can be used on leather, suede, nubuck, canvas, shearling and more.
  • It’s a ‘super hydrophobic’ formula. I’m not sure how it can be ‘super’ hydrophobic, as in my opinion it either is or isn’t, but the customer reviews seem to back up this claim – the spray repels water for many months at a time.
  • Repels water, ice and mud, whilst allowing the fabrics to breathe.

Cons:

  • You will need to let your boots and shoes dry for 24hrs after using this spray, before exposing them to moisture.
  • The non-aerosol design means a less precise application.

Overall for the price this is a great spray that can be used on your whole shoe closest, making it one of the best waterproofing sprays for shoes! View the current price on Amazon here.

2. *Best For Leather* KIWI Boot Waterproofer

View current price on Amazon here.

If you are looking for a tough waterproofing spray for leather shoes and boots, then you won’t be disappointed with the performance of the KIWI brand. They are known for their extremely effective waterproofing sprays that last.

Here are the pros and cons of this spray:

Pros:

  • Designed for tough leather boots and shoes. Full grain leather and patent leather.
  • Extremely durable water barrier, while still allowing materials to breathe – letting your shoes and boots breathe is so important for the longevity of the footwear.
  • Silicone protection – great for harsh outdoor conditions.

Cons:

  • Not for use on suede and nubuck – designed for leather and outdoor boots.

3. *Best For Suede* Nikwax Nubuck and Suede Proof Waterproofing

View current price on Amazon here.

My top pick for Suede and nubuck shoe proofing is this Nikwax spray that is specially formulated for the materials.

Sometimes its best to go with a specialised product, rather than an all rounder, if you have high priced items that next extra love and care.

Here are the pros and cons for this spray:

Pros:

  • Both water based and biodegradable which is great to see. The spray contains no PFCs, VOCs, optical brighteners, or added scent. For me this is a plus – nobody likes to breathe in extra chemicals/ it’s better for the environment.
  • Specially formulated for suede and nubuck.
  • Protects footwear from water and ice. Also protects shoes and boots from stains.
  • Easy to apply and dries overnight.
  • Doesn’t change color or texture of shoes and boots.

Cons:

  • Be careful to cover any heels on shoes and boots to prevent discolouration of the plastic – this can be tricky, but it’s worth covering them up. This spray should only be applied to the suede or nubuck sections of the shoes.

4. *Best For Canvas* KIWI Sneaker Protector

View current price on Amazon here.

Protecting your canvas shoes and sneakers is really important for increasing the longevity of the footwear, as well as your comfort – nobody wants soggy toes!

FAQs

Do waterproof sprays for shoes work?

Waterproof sprays for shoes do work when applied correctly. Always follow the instructions on the spray bottle and allow the spray to dry and properly cure. Exposure to water before the spray has cured will lead to ineffective results.

The most common problem when using a waterproofing spray is not letting the product dry and cure properly. Many users rush to wear the shoes out, before the spray has had chance to create a protective seal.

If your waterproofing spray does not come with instructions leave your shoes for 72 hours to cure, if in doubt.

What is the best shoe protection spray?

The best shoe protection spray is Rust-Oleum, Clear Shield H2O Boot and Shoe Spray, in my opinion as a footwear enthusiast. This spray is a great all-rounder for multiple shoe fabrics.

Shop the Rust-Oleum spray here.

Can I use waterproof spray on sneakers?

You can use waterproof spray on sneakers if the product you have is safe for use on the specific material your sneakers are made of (always do a patch test first). Each waterproofing spray product should state which fabrics it is suitable for. If you are in doubt you can purchase a sneaker specific waterproofing spray such as the Kiki Sneaker Protector.

How do you waterproof shoes with spray?

The safest way to waterproof shoes with spray is to take the shoes outdoors and place them on a clean, dry surface. Check the bottle of spray for specific instructions (e.g. how far to hold the spray from the shoes) and begin to apply the product. Allow the shoes to dry and cure properly before wearing, according to the instructions on the bottle.

Be careful not to inhale the product as waterproofing sprays are often formulated with a lot of chemicals. Wear a mask if you are in doubt.

Some sprays are also flammable, so make sure not to use them indoors. Outside on dry concrete is best, as you can wash it down after you are done.

It’s also best to remove your laces before waterproofing your shoes, so the product can properly coat the tongue of the shoes. You can waterproof your laces separately with the product, as long as the product can be applied on that material (if you are using a leather specific product for example, then don’t put that on your laces).

How long does a waterproofing spray last?

Waterproofing sprays typically last for one month or more. Some sprays will last for twelve months, and some for only two weeks, but the majority of waterproofing sprays on the market last for four weeks (one month).

It’s best to reapply your waterproofing spray often to ensure your gear is protected.

At the very least make sure to waterproof your stuff before the rainy and winter season.
