Rainbow jumper: five ways to style

Rainbow jumpers are absolutely everywhere in the knitwear world right now! If you’ve managed to bag a rainbow jumper for yourself, read on for some funky tips on how to wear it…

Multi-coloured pieces can be a bit tricky to work into your wardrobe, but I’ve found that mixing them with pastel denim, playful prints and even darker colours can create some wonderful outfits.

Here are some ways I’ve styled my rainbow jumper from Lazy Oaf; I absolutely love this piece and wear it every chance I get!

1. Pastel Denim

Whilst not as bright as the primary colours, pastels add a lovely touch of flamboyant whimsy to any outfit. Block pastels pair perfectly with brighter colours, tying together the items of clothing without dragging the eye from the focal piece.

I paired my pastel pink mom jeans with my rainbow jumper and added a teddy bear purse as a cute touch. I would also pair brightly coloured Converse with this outfit, to complete the look.

2. Bold Colour

Choose a bold colour from the palette of your jumper and have a rummage through your wardrobe to find items that match! This method maintains the vibrancy of the outfit without detracting from the rainbow pattern of the jumper.

I added a lovely red cropped jumper under my rainbow sweater, with a frilled collar and cuffs for a bit of textured detail. Then I chose a bright red denim skirt and bag to pull all of the pieces in together. This would also look great with items of any of the colours in the jumper.

As the jumper is slightly cropped, pairing it with a high-waisted skirt like this one is really flattering, as the cut of the pieces adds shape to the silhouette.

3. Contrast black

Okay so I had a bit too much fun with this look! Pairing your vibrant knitwear with darker colours adds a touch of ‘moodyness’ to your outfit.

Complete with edgy accessories like shades, fishnet tights, a beanie and facemask. Add chunky black boots or Doc Martens for an extra touch of cool.

The juxtaposition of the vibrant rainbow jumper and the dark skater skirt is really striking, and a fun way to play with style.

4. Playful Prints

Don’t feel you need to shy away from other playful pieces if you’re already wearing one. Mixing prints can work so well… there are no rules after all!

I’ve paired my rainbow sweater with a leopard printed pouch bag and a houndstooth skirt from Topshop. I love the effect of the three prints, and think in this case ‘more is more’. Have a look through your wardrobe and see what printed pieces you already own that may pair well with your jumper.

Experiment and have fun, there are no rules in fashion!

5. Dungarees or Overalls

Boohoo pink dungarees

Dungarees or overalls can be a great way to tone down your rainbow top (effect best achieved with standard blue wash denim of course!). Dungarees cover up a portion of the pattern, allowing a bit to peek through.

I couldn’t resist pairing my rainbow sweater with a pair of pink dungarees, but a light wash blue denim would work really well if you wanted to make your rainbow jumper more wearable.

I added a pair of funky lightening bolt socks to tie the bright colours together, but a pair of simple neutral socks and some Converse would work great with this outfit.

To elongate the legs whilst wearing light wash blue denim dungarees add a pair of black heeled boots to the look to lengthen the silhouette. Pair with a black bag to finish the look.
